Cabot Issues 2008 Sustainability Report

December 4, 2008

BOSTON, Dec. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Cabot Corporation (NYSE: CBT) has issued its first Sustainability Report which is now available on its website at cabot-corp.com/index. In this report, Cabot presents an overview of its social, economic and environmental performance, its management practices and its areas of focus for continuous improvement.

Cabot has a long history of exceptional performance in these areas that has earned it various awards and external recognition. This is the first time that the entire Cabot story has been assembled in one document and publicized. In commenting on the report, Cabot's CEO and President, Patrick Prevost said, "Cabot strives to operate at the highest standards worldwide and to be compliant with all applicable laws everywhere we operate. We have a culture of continuous improvement to help us achieve and sustain that excellence. Meeting aggressive targets has been part of our history, is fundamental to our success and will continue to be vitally important as we face the challenges the future holds for us. Our stakeholders expect Cabot to be excellent in the sustainability area and we expect no less of ourselves."

The report presents Cabot's safety, health and environmental performance over the last three years as well as its economic impact and community outreach efforts. There is information in the report about Cabot's ethics and compliance standards as well as its global safety, health and environmental standards and operating guidelines. It covers Cabot's product stewardship processes and its involvement in employee health studies for over 70 years.

The report provides an overview of Cabot's Carbon emissions from all of its operations. The company has inventoried all direct and indirect carbon dioxide emissions associated with production and research facilities worldwide. While increased production during the last three years produced an expected emissions increase, the company has lowered its carbon dioxide intensity by 5%. This metric is defined as the amount of carbon dioxide produced per ton of Cabot product produced.

The Sustainability Report also highlights Cabot's long held policy against the mining of any materials from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Cabot strictly forbids any purchases of materials mined in the DRC and certifies for its customers that the tantalum it produces does not come from ore mined in the DRC. The company deplores all unlawful and immoral activities surrounding the use and production of coltan mined in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Cabot's complete position on coltan can be found on its website.

The company plans to update its Sustainability Report at least annually and welcomes comments and feedback. A special email address has been set up for this purpose: Sustainability_Report@cabot-corp.com.
